As a general rule, contested bases are never a good idea.
carriontrooper (05/28/2012 10:42am):
The one at the center? Allright, I'll change them into cities.
walkerboh01 (05/28/2012 11:06am):
Well the ones in the center yes, but also any bases where the capture can be disrupted by an
enemy. Basically, if it is not certain who will be able to capture the base -- if you have to fight
over it -- it's a contested base. The problem with this is that having a base advantage is an
autowin, because it's such a huge advantage. So the whole game just turns into who can get the
base, and it loses a lot of appeal for most people.
carriontrooper (05/28/2012 11:44pm):
But isn't that the idea, though? In strategy games, you'd have to outsmart your enemy to
cap and defend that contested base. Maybe the attack on the contested base was a
distraction for a bigger attack on their base. In any case, this map is best used with
FoW, so the players must think more carefully about which base they're attacking, and
prepare if that base turns out to be occupied.
I think that's the essence of strategy games. Only playtest will tell if this map is fun
or not.

Perhaps compromising with a com tower instead then? It's more exiting than just fighting over a
city, but less decisive than a base. Then again there are already two com towers for each team
which favours Javier as it is.

You're right. And everyone who plays now adays whine and whine about stalemates but a
few contested things will USUALLY stop stalemates.
Nyvelion (05/29/2012 09:04pm):
I don't think "Whoever gets the center base(s) first wins" is worth it just to avoid a
stalemate, true as that part may be.

"But isn't that the idea, though? In strategy games, you'd have to outsmart your enemy to

No, capturing and defending contested bases is not what the essence of AW games is.
Basically what you've done on this map is you've said, "Whoever can win the central battle for
the bases wins the game". You might as well just turn them into HQs, because that's essentially
what it is. Nothing else that happens on the map matters nearly as much as those bases,
because bases are so much more disproportionately valuable than anything else in the game.
So by turning the entire battle into "get those bases", you cause the rest of the map to be
neglected. Who cares what GE does? If OS loses a base to BM, GE is screwed too.

My point here is that there are better ways to make maps interesting than throwing auto-win
buttons in the middle and telling players to fight over them. Contested cities are much better,
because they provide a small advantage if you can capture them, but not a game-winning
advantage. There's much more depth to the game, much more room for back-and-forth, and the
strategy and variety of gameplay will be much richer.
walkerboh01 (05/30/2012 02:39am):
By the way, this map is still a HUGE improvement over your earlier ones. =)

hmmmm, man that's kinda hard to fix. Maybe give only YC the infantry and everyone else
gets no starting units?

guh, the center dudes can really easily get sniped by Grit artillery on their own base. I
gotta give the dudes at center two starting bases.
