Neurtal/contested islands that have bases on them don't sit right with me. Don't get me
wrong, I love the idea of having a setup like that, but I'm always worried that the island
will succumb to problems. For example, rushing the opponent's neutral base to stall their
start and gain control of the unreinforced island is too strong of an incentive,
especially with FTA and/or FoW on your side. Also, if the battle goes south, there's
virtually no way to reclaim the island, even if you're winning on other fronts, making it
stalemate prone.

It might be easier to prevent that by giving the "defending side" on the island a safe
spot to camp battleships and bombard the shoreline/near base if the island is lost. For
example, if you extended the bottom middle island down to the bottom of the map and RF had
the ability to keep battleships safely in that bay on the SW of that island (combined with
increased beach area and a reasonable landing area), there might be half a chance of
recovering lost ground, assuming you aren't struggling elsewhere as well.

Anyway, long story short is that there will always be problems with island warfare, no
matter how attractive it is. You might be able to make it better in some ways, but it's a
sticky situation, that much is sure. That said, do what you want. I'm the first one in
line to say "yeah, I know that probably isn't a great idea, but screw it.. it sounds good
to me." :)

Yeah I don't do many island-based maps so not quite what the ideal setup is. I
guess I could either make those island bases preowned (thus essentially
removing most of the competitive aspect of securing the properties), or just turn
those to cities and add a neutral base to each home island to help with unit
production, so players would have to cart land units from their home islands to
the contested islands. I'll probably just test all of them and see which is the best
one to employ,

Yeah, and it can't hurt to get creative with it either. There might be a really fun and interesting
way to set it up that helps alleviate most of the problems associated with it, and that would be
pretty neat. On the other hand, I don't think there's any way to make it work like an A-rank map or
better, but that's not to say it wouldn't be fun to play on. :)
