Hello everyboy.

Here's my second design map, so i think i've finally understood FTA.
This map is designed for teams, top versus bottom players (ABBA). i don't think it works for all versus all or left versus right.

Enjoy fighting for victory!.
srstarry (05/06/2016 04:18am):
you dont need infantry FTA counter if you are playing teams.

All you need is to make sure the teams is ABBA

I think it doesn't need infantry FTA counter but it's not a bad idea.
Jackie Milton (05/06/2016 06:42am):
The concept of FTA is based on the fact that someone will always be first to reach key properties, the
advantage obviously given to the player with the first turn. An FTA counter aims, not to give a second
player advantage over the first, but exactly half the advantage, or in other words, the first player has
advantage on one front while the second has advantage on another. That's where the single infantry
counter comes in: it is assumed that starting on a two-base map that a player will build two infantry their
first turn, thus to give 1/2 advantage to the second player, he/she is given one infantry (generally on the
favorable base), and will essentially be one turn ahead from one base and one turn behind from the other.

So it seems you understand this concept, but the rules change when more players enter the battle, and
having preowned cities changes this too. So for 4p teams, teams must be set up ABBA. that turn order
automatically eliminates FTA, and player location doesn't really matter, because though A will move first,
they will also move last, so not counter is needed. FFA, on the other hand is a different story. SO since
linear distance is much closer than diagonal distance, diagonal players will not see each other until late
game, so FTA is only necessary for adjacent players. As such BM and OS should be diagonally opposite
(Meaning each will have FTA over GE and YC), and GE and YC should both have a single infantry
counter.

FTA counters don't work with preowned properties, because they through things off. 2 bases and an HQ
give you 3k funds, to spend on 2 infantry. having anymore than that give the possibility of one team
creating an early recon to rush key properties. Not good. so it's a good idea to keep any properties that
aren't bases neutral. Exceptions of course exist but, that's enough for now

Edited: removed preowned properties and removed infantry FTA counter.
Xmo5 (05/06/2016 12:49pm | Edited: 05/06/2016 01:19pm):
Great explanation from Jackie here. I definitely recommend switching BM and GE positions,
as Jackie recommends, because it's not only the cleanest way for the FTA counter to work
in teams, but it's also really the only way to counter FTA for FFA (Free For All) games.
So, in summary: Switch GE and BM positions. If you want the map to be viable for FFA, give
an infantry to GE and YC only and put it on the base closest to the neutral base. If you
don't want it to be viable for FFA, you can leave the infantry out altogether. (Personally
I would leave them out, since FFA wouldn't work very well on this map... the horizontal
battles wouldn't really work at all)

Another point to add is that it would be nice to see wider paths across the river or
things will get bottled up. Usually its good to have at least one reasonably wide path
with a couple smaller ones intermixed. I'm worried that the far perimeter of the map will
be horribly neglected as well, and for a couple of reasons. Generally, air units support
land battle, rather than having their own independent battle, so I don't see that
happening. Land units won't go through there because of the heavy terrain, and also
because it's out of the way. A wise king (head of the MC) once told me that the battle
will almost always focus entirely on the direct line between enemy bases. Keep that in
mind when you think about where you want units to go.

As a final note, I hope you realize that the simple inclusion of a quote from the (not
nearly as good) Lion King sequel ("A wise king once told me") has sent me on a binge of
listening to the original Lion King soundtrack. Imma let you finish, but Hans Zimmer and
Elton John wrote one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. Of all time! Only like for
real though, what an awesome job they did. It's easily up there with John Williams' Star
Wars soundtrack(s). Coincidence that both movies featured James Earl Jones voicing one of
their most memorable and iconic characters? I think not!

EDIT As they say, the proof is in the pudding (and who doesn't love pudding? Not I! It's
pudding time, children!) so I thought I would help refresh everyone's memory. The emotion!
The energy! The genius! The nostalgia!
